We are excited to announce a new partnership with Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig (SKG) to bring Lab 1: Certificate in Short Film Production to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. This intensive program will begin in September 2025 and provide students with hands-on experience in filmmaking while exploring storytelling rooted in cultural identity.
About the Sault Ste. Marie Campus
Weengushk Film Institute has partnered with Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig (SKG) to expand access to media arts education in Northern Ontario. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to cultural preservation, language integration, and Indigenous-based education, allowing students to learn film production skills while connecting with cultural roots.

Lab 1: Certificate in Short Film Production
Dates: September, 2025
Tuition: $10,000.00
Description:
Lab 1 is a 12-week, intensive program that guides students through every stage of filmmaking—from concept development and screenwriting to production, editing, and post-production. Students will develop their storytelling skills in a supportive environment that emphasizes cultural identity, language preservation, and Indigenous storytelling traditions.
What You’ll Learn:

Story Development: Craft narratives with cultural resonance and personal expression.

Screenwriting and Production: Master the fundamentals of scriptwriting, directing, cinematography, and production.

Post-Production Skills: Edit, compose, and refine your films using industry-standard techniques and software.

Cultural Integration: Learn from Indigenous leaders, integrating language and cultural teachings into storytelling.
At the end of the program, students will complete a short film project showcased at the Weengushk International Film Festival and other festivals, providing networking opportunities with industry professionals.
Earn University Credits
Lab 1 provides students with 15 university credits through Laurentian University, contributing to a Bachelor’s degree. Completing Lab 1 and Lab 2 offers a total of 30 credits toward a BA, covering elective requirements and opening doors to further academic opportunities.

This program honours Chief Shingwauk’s vision of a Teaching Wigwam, supporting Indigenous knowledge and education within a contemporary setting. Our collaboration with SKG allows students to benefit from an Anishinaabe-centered learning environment that celebrates cultural identity, language, and the arts.
