About WFI

Weengushk Film Institute (WFI) is a not-for-profit artist-focused, film and television training centre, dedicated to unlocking the creative potential of Aboriginal Youth and persons of diversity.

While developing market leading skills and experiences to its participants, WFI provides significant value by creating a mentorship network between participants engaged in learning and senior media industry professionals. This approach fosters skills development through film and training and also creates access points to key decision makers from different areas of the industry.

Our Vision

Weengushk’s vision paves the way to engagement and cultural advancement of underserved communities in Canada and abroad, particularly aboriginal youth and persons of culturally diverse origins who have few role models within the industry. Specifically, the mandate serves to create an environment where all training programs are respectful and sensitive to the traditions, culture, stories and societal challenges of these groups. This is accomplished through a hands-on experiential approach in a creative environment, mentored by senior industry professionals.

Our Goal

Weengushk’s goal is to train, develop, guide and mentor young emerging artists; to develop their creative skills and attain a level of professionalism that promotes self-sustainability in a competitive market.

WFI envisions the collection, preservation and representation of new creative voices in the film and television industry; encouraging the development and recognition of these diverse participants to enhance the artistic vitality of Canadian life. It is an innovative and entrepreneurial response to an identified and documented absence of training opportunities for Aboriginal and youth of diversity in Northern Canada and within Canada.

Providing hands on training with the top of the line professional instructors and Creative Advisors, participants have access to one on one mentorship and actively participate in the exchange of ideas, stories, freedom of expression and diverse cultural histories.

The Weengushk Difference

Weengushk’s educational mandate is to deliver a balanced training program that incorporates both skills development and media business management training, so that participants will create market-driven content that reflects high production values. This will result in participants acquiring the necessary tools to advance artistically, professionally and promoting self-sustainability.
